The gourds are grown in the coastal valleys and then brought to the town of Cochas, high up in the mountains. Traditionally the carvers, who are both women and men, would carve scenes of their village life. Many of the gourds have stories of village events or fiestas. Made by women from the towns of Vukanathi, Zenzelemi, and Siyaphambili in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa.
